Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Republic of Croatia’s accession to the European Union. EU membership has created numerous opportunities for education, mobility, international cooperation and local development, while also reminding us of the fundamental values on which the European community is built.

Inspired by the recent participation of our staff members Jana and Ivica in the Erasmus+ course “Ambassadors of Democracy: Building a Democratic Culture in Schools”, we have prepared the European Democracy Alphabet.

Through 30 letters, concepts and illustrations, the alphabet presents the rights, values and mechanisms that shape democratic life in Europe, including active citizenship, dialogue, inclusion, human rights, solidarity and the rule of law.

The photo gallery presents all 30 illustrations, while more detailed explanations of each concept are available in the embedded Facebook post at the end of the article.

At Public Open University Čakovec, we believe that democratic competences are developed through lifelong learning, open dialogue and active participation in community life.

We invite you to explore the alphabet and join us in marking 13 years of Croatia’s membership of the European Union.
