The AI4ID: Improving rehabilitation and independent living skills of adults with intellectual disabilities using virtual reality and artificial intelligence project applies virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities and to training them for independent living. The project will develop nine immersive virtual scenarios to be used in a safe and controlled environment: five scenarios for rehabilitation therapies (cognitive, physical, speech and language, interpersonal for developing social skills, and intrapersonal emotional) and four scenarios for independent living (household autonomy, social relationships, citizenship and work). Artificial intelligence will be used to collect and analyse user data, personalise activities, adjust difficulty levels and provide real-time feedback, enabling professionals to monitor progress and adapt individual rehabilitation plans. Two training activities are planned: the first for the partners’ development teams who build and configure the scenarios, and the second for therapists who will apply them in local pilot activities in all partner countries. The project results – installable applications with the scenarios, a handbook with recommendations and tutorials in English and the consortium languages, and overviews of available VR devices and AI tools with ethical and safety guidelines – will be freely available for download on the project website.
