Dear teachers, educators, lecturers and mentors in adult education,
on World Teachers’ Day, we would like to express our gratitude for the vocation through which you show, every day, that no one is ever too old to learn, grow and make a new start.
Adult education is a unique area of the teaching profession. Adults bring their life and professional experience, knowledge, responsibilities, hopes and desire for change to the learning process. Teaching adults therefore means knowing how to listen, understand, motivate and encourage.
A teacher in adult education is not merely someone who imparts knowledge. They are a mentor, adviser and companion on the learning journey – someone who creates an environment in which adult learners feel respected, capable and free to learn.
This is precisely why success in adult education is not only about gaining a qualification. It is also about the moment when a person begins to believe in their own abilities again.
As Nelson Mandela said:
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
In adult education, that change often happens quietly – through a new skill, a new opportunity, a change in career path or the courage to return to the classroom.
That is why today we celebrate not only those who teach.
We celebrate the people who enable others to continue learning throughout their lives.
Thank you for using your knowledge, experience and dedication to build a culture of lifelong learning and for giving every adult learner the opportunity to take a new step, embrace a new possibility and make a new start.
Learning has no age.
Knowledge has no expiry date.
And the opportunity for a new beginning is never lost.
We wish you a very happy World Teachers’ Day.
