About
The project “Developing the Cultural Capital of Roma Pupils” aimed to make up for the lack of cultural capital and reading literacy in Roma primary school pupils in Slovenia and Croatia. It involved four partner organizations: two adult education institutions and two primary schools. The objectives were to develop the cultural capital and reading literacy of Roma pupils, strengthen the role and activities of teachers in this area, reduce the gap between Roma and majority pupils, develop innovative approaches for working with Roma pupils, and deepen understanding of Roma issues. The activities carried out were: analysis of the current level of cultural capital and reading literacy in Roma pupils through teacher interviews (Ljudska univerza Lendava), development of a joint curriculum to raise the cultural capital of Roma pupils (Pucko otvoreno uciliste Cakovec), creation of didactic materials to implement the curriculum (Osnovna skola Orehovica), pilot implementation of curriculum activities and production of a school magazine by Roma pupils (Osnovna sola Franceta Preserna Crensovci), evaluation of the curriculum activities, international partner meetings, and dissemination of project results. The expected results were: analysis report on Roma pupils’ cultural capital, joint curriculum to raise Roma pupils’ cultural capital, didactic materials for implementing curriculum, Roma pupils’ participation in curriculum activities and school magazine, more competent teachers in working with Roma pupils. The curriculum, didactic materials and experience gained will continue to be used after the project to benefit more Roma pupils and share good practice with other schools.
