Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity has used up all the natural resources that the planet can regenerate in one year. From this day until the end of the year, we are living “on credit,” consuming the resources of future generations. This year, Croatia’s Overshoot Day was on April 27, the date by which we would have exhausted our annual budget of natural resources if the entire world lived like Croatia.

At the Public Open University Čakovec, we are aware of this challenge and strive to contribute to sustainability and a better future through our daily work and numerous projects.

Education for Change

One of the key ways we contribute is by providing educational programs focused on sustainability. Programs such as the organic cultivation of medicinal herbs, vegetables, and fruits provide participants with practical knowledge for a more sustainable way of life and production. These programs are also available for free through the voucher measure of the Croatian Employment Service.

Projects for a Greener Community

We are also proud of the projects we participate in, which directly contribute to a greener and more sustainable community.

  • Energy Renovation of the POU Čakovec Building: With this project, we are reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The renovation includes installing thermal insulation, heat pumps, new LED lighting, and a photovoltaic power plant to produce our own clean energy.
  • Recycling of Waste with Handicrafts: This project raises awareness about environmental protection and the importance of recycling. Through creative workshops, we turn waste into art and new useful items, showing how everyone can contribute to waste reduction.
  • InclusiGardens – Digital and Sustainable Pathways to Social Inclusion through Urban Gardening: The goal of this project is to empower individuals and communities for sustainable urban gardening. Through digital tools, workshops, and an e-cookbook with “zero-waste” recipes, we promote social inclusion, food security, and greener lifestyles.
  • RAGT – Raising Awareness for a Greener Tomorrow: This project is focused on education about green practices and environmental protection. We provide educators and adult learners with resources to develop “green skills” to build a more sustainable future together. Also available to everyone is the “Google for waste” – an info-educational search engine that helps with proper waste sorting.
  • HER[AI]TAGE – Preserving Intangible Cultural Heritage and Environmental Knowledge Through AI Technology: Through this innovative project, we use artificial intelligence to preserve intangible cultural heritage and traditional environmental knowledge. In this way, we combine advanced technology with ecological awareness and preserve a precious heritage for future generations.

Every step, no matter how small, is important on the path to a sustainable future. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our activities and efforts. Join us in creating a greener tomorrow!
