Throughout the workshop, students explored artificial intelligence through practical activities, discussions and collaborative investigations, with the aim of encouraging critical reflection on how AI recognises patterns, what data it learns from and why its outputs are not always neutral. In the first part of the session, students used a digital game to investigate how a neural network recognises drawings. They discovered that artificial intelligence does not understand concepts in the same way humans do, but instead identifies similarities between shapes and large numbers of previously learned examples. They then examined how digital tools generate representations of people, professions and local identities, analysing together who was represented, who was left out and when these representations became stereotypical. One particularly engaging activity involved students working in teams as AI bias detectives. They investigated potential gender, age-related and regional biases in AI-generated outputs and considered how clearer, more precise instructions (prompts) could help reduce stereotypical representations.<\/p>\n
The workshop provided an opportunity to explore important questions about the role of artificial intelligence in contemporary society, particularly when such systems are used in education, recruitment and the media. Participants agreed that digital literacy today involves much more than knowing how to use digital tools; it also requires the ability to ask critical questions: Where does a particular result come from? What data is it based on? What consequences might it have?<\/p>\n
Activities such as this demonstrate the importance of building connections between schools, adult education institutions and the local community. Learning does not end when we leave the classroom; it continues through cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and experiences.
