This mobility was organised within the framework of their Erasmus Accreditation in the field of adult education. The host organisation was the <em>Servicezentrum der Berliner Volkshochschulen<\/em> (Service Centre of Berlin Adult Education Centres), an organisation with extensive experience in designing and implementing adult education programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Servicezentrum<\/em> is the central service hub for the network of Berlin adult education centres. Its primary mission is to coordinate and support the work of twelve Berlin adult education centres (<em>Volkshochschulen<\/em> &#8211; VHS), one for each city district. Its scope of work includes tasks that would consume too much time or resources for individual institutions to develop independently: designing programme frameworks, providing professional development for teaching staff, maintaining digital infrastructure, managing marketing, creating shared materials, and facilitating international cooperation. In other words, while individual adult education centres implement programmes at the district level to meet the needs of their learners, the <em>Servicezentrum<\/em> ensures that the entire network operates cohesively, adhering to uniform quality standards and a clear strategic direction.<\/p>\n<p>The mobility was conducted as part of the Erasmus+ Job Shadowing Week hosted by the Berlin adult education centres, gathering 45 participants from 10 European countries: Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden. Learning in an international environment is crucial for developing innovative approaches to working with adult learners. Engaging with colleagues who operate within differently structured systems offers something difficult to achieve within one&#8217;s own framework: an opportunity to view customary working methods from a fresh perspective, identify blind spots in one&#8217;s own practice, and adopt solutions that have already been proven in real-world conditions elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17978\" src=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/002-39.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1530\" height=\"2040\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/002-39.webp 1530w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/002-39-225x300.webp 225w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/002-39-768x1024.webp 768w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/002-39-1152x1536.webp 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1530px) 100vw, 1530px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Programme Overview<\/h2>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The four-day programme focused on practices applicable to the adult education system, particularly in the areas of inclusion, language teaching, and community engagement\u2014both through direct work with learners and via cooperation with other institutions. Following this, the <em>Servicezentrum<\/em> provided a detailed presentation of its structural organisation and areas of operation. Participants learned how the central hub helps coordinate the twelve Berlin adult education centres and the range of services it provides to ensure educators and learners have access to a high-quality, modern, and accessible educational offer.<\/p>\n<p>Special attention was given to their marketing approach, their strategies for building brand recognition in the digital space, and their comprehensive system for the continuous professional development of teachers. This segment of the programme sparked a direct discussion: participants had the opportunity to compare the Croatian and German approaches to adult education, specifically juxtaposing the local Berlin context with our Me\u0111imurje-\u010cakovec context. Participants were offered the opportunity to observe three different educational activities: a smartphone usage course, a painting course, and an A1.2 level German language integration course. Each staff member from POU \u010cakovec shadowed one of these workshops. The classroom observations were followed by discussions with both teachers and adult learners, fostering an in-depth dialogue on teaching methodologies, adult learner motivation, and the adaptation of content to diverse needs.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity to directly compare approaches to the integration of foreign nationals through language courses proved particularly invaluable. Berlin has decades of experience working with a large influx of new residents, and the solutions developed there serve as excellent reference material for the Croatian context, where comprehensive education systems for immigrants are only just beginning to take a more structured shape.<\/p>\n<p>A crucial aspect of the visit was a tour of the building to examine its spatial orientation system as a prime example of universal accessibility. Accessibility at <em>vhs Tempelhof-Sch\u00f6neberg<\/em> is not the result of retroactive fixes and adaptations; rather, it is rooted in <em>inclusive design from the very beginning<\/em>. This approach is driven by a clear ethos: an adult education centre must be open to all, ensuring that everyone\u2014regardless of age, language, physical abilities, or educational background\u2014truly has the opportunity to participate in adult education activities. Whereas the previous day involved shadowing a single, specific lesson, participants were now introduced to how various aspects of the German integration course are implemented across different phases, from beginner to advanced levels.<\/p>\n<p>To better understand the context, it is worth noting that the comprehensive integration course lasts for 700 hours. The language component covers levels A1.1 to B1.2, with 100 hours allocated per level, culminating in a 100-hour socio-cultural and political orientation course. The system is highly structured yet flexible: specific levels can be extended or adapted depending on the group&#8217;s composition, and learner counselling is conducted as a separate, continuous activity throughout the process. Such details demonstrate that integration is not viewed as an isolated service, but rather as a holistic process intertwining linguistic, civic, and cultural learning.<\/p>\n<p>A tour of the facility also revealed how <em>vhs Pankow<\/em> delivers its programmes in a collaborative environment, sharing space with a museum and a library. This inter-institutional cooperation, which is a daily reality in Berlin, is not merely a practical logistical solution. It is essential for ensuring that <em>inclusion in adult education acquires both a horizontal and vertical dimension<\/em>. The hosts organised a World Caf\u00e9 format, where participants rotated between tables in small groups to discuss various thematic units. In a relaxed yet focused atmosphere, participants explored four main areas: a comparison of adult education systems across Europe, common challenges encountered in daily work, proposals for potential solutions, and key takeaways to bring back home. These smaller group settings facilitated a deeper exchange of experiences and ideas with colleagues from across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>This specific format significantly strengthened the European dimension of the mobility. It demonstrated that merely attending a lecture on the European context is insufficient; true insight emerges only when specific questions about daily operations are posed to colleagues from other institutions. Mobilities provide direct insight into the operations of European organisations, facilitate practice-based learning, expand professional networks, and enable the transfer of innovative ideas back to the home institution. In the field of adult education\u2014where flexibility, inclusivity, and the ability to adapt to learner needs are key elements of quality\u2014such experiences hold exceptional value, both for individual staff members and the institution as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>The Erasmus Accreditation enables POU \u010cakovec to plan the long-term, strategic involvement of its staff in international professional development activities. Participating in the job shadowing in Berlin demonstrated that mobility is not just an opportunity to visit another institution, but a robust form of professional learning. Through classroom observation, discussions with hosts, exchanges with international peers, and critical reflection on their own practices, staff members acquire concrete knowledge and ideas applicable to their daily work, alongside a renewed enthusiasm for their profession.<\/p>\n<p>We extend our gratitude to our hosts from the <em>Servicezentrum der Berliner Volkshochschulen<\/em> for an excellently organised week, their warm welcome, and the highly informative programme.
