The first day was hosted in <b>\u010cakovec (Croatia)<\/b>, followed by a second day of sessions in <b>Ormo\u017e (Slovenia)<\/b>. The consortium is led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retzhof.at\/en\/adult-education-retzhof\/\"><b>Bildungshaus Retzhof<\/b><\/a> (Austria), partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/en\/\"><b>Pu\u010dko otvoreno u\u010dili\u0161te \u010cakovec<\/b><\/a> (Croatia) and <a href=\"https:\/\/lu-ormoz.si\/about-us\"><b>Ljudska univerza Ormo\u017e<\/b><\/a> (Slovenia).<\/p>\n<p>While the project aims to produce tangible results &#8211; including a micro-credential curriculum and an open-access online course &#8211; the core innovation of SMART AGE lies in its pedagogical engine: the practical adaptation of the <b>European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/projects-and-activities\/education-and-training\/digital-transformation-education\/digital-competence-framework-digcomp\/digcomp-30_en\"><b>DigComp 3.0<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17139\" src=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1753\" height=\"1240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-4.jpg 1753w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-4-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-4-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-4-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/02-4-1536x1087.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1753px) 100vw, 1753px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>The pedagogical shift: From DigComp 2.2 to 3.0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>For the adult education community, the transition to the <b>DigComp 3.0<\/b> framework represents a critical evolution in how we define &#8220;digital literacy&#8221; in the age of AI, especially for vulnerable groups like seniors.<\/p>\n<p>In the previous version, <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/repository\/handle\/JRC128415\"><b>DigComp 2.2<\/b><\/a>, knowledge regarding Artificial Intelligence was introduced primarily as a contextual addition. It featured <b>Annex 2<\/b>, specifically titled <i>&#8220;Citizens interacting with AI systems&#8221;<\/i>, which provided examples of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. While this was a significant step forward, AI literacy was often viewed as a supplementary layer to core digital skills.<\/p>\n<p><b>The SMART AGE project embraces the paradigm shift presented by DigComp 3.0.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In this updated framework, AI is no longer relegated to an annex or a specific &#8220;advanced&#8221; module. Instead, it is woven into the fabric of everyday digital interaction. Our curriculum development analysis reveals that <b>AI competence now features explicitly or implicitly across the large majority of DigComp competences.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, of the 523 learning outcomes in DigComp 3.0, <b>13% are AI-explicit<\/b> and <b>63% are AI-implicit<\/b>, meaning that over 75% of the framework is directly relevant to AI systems. This distinction between <i>explicit<\/i> and <i>implicit<\/i> is vital for our educational approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>AI-explicit:<\/b> Competences where AI systems are the primary subject (e.g., using a generative AI tool to create content).<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>AI-implicit:<\/b> Competences where AI is present in the background or as an option. This includes:\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Alternative tools:<\/b> Deciding whether to use an AI system versus a standard digital technology for a task.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Embedded functionality:<\/b> Using collaboration tools that have AI features (like automated note-taking) built-in.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Operational understanding:<\/b> Knowing how to prompt, re-draft, and check the accuracy of AI outputs.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Ethical implications:<\/b> Understanding the environmental impact, transparency, and privacy concerns of using these systems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17141\" src=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/03-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/03-4.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/03-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/03-4-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/03-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pou-cakovec.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/03-4-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why this matters for seniors in rural areas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>For our target demographic &#8211; seniors living in rural areas &#8211; the SMART AGE project moves beyond standard technical instruction. We are shifting the emphasis from simple &#8220;technical information handling&#8221; to <b>critical understanding<\/b>, explicitly recognizing older adults\u2019 lived experience as a cognitive resource.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the 10 thematic clusters that will be developed as part of the project, the SMART AGE curriculum helps seniors transition from &#8220;tool dependence&#8221; to &#8220;judgement-based resistance&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Disinformation &amp; emotional triggers:<\/b> Rather than just teaching how to fact-check, we focus on <b>manipulation awareness<\/b>. Seniors learn to recognize the specific emotional triggers and persuasive techniques designed to bypass critical thinking, fostering a cognitive resilience that goes beyond technical detection tools.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>AI-generated content awareness:<\/b> We shift the learning focus from &#8220;content production&#8221; to <b>critical interpretation<\/b>. In an era of deepfakes and synthetic media, the priority is to equip seniors with the skills to distinguish between authentic and AI-generated reality.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Algorithmic awareness:<\/b> It is not enough to browse; seniors must understand the <b>invisible filtering<\/b> that shapes their online experience. We teach how personal data is used to curate echo chambers, enabling them to recognize when their worldview is being algorithmically manipulated.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Psychological defense against scams:<\/b> Moving beyond basic password security, we address the <b>psychological mechanics<\/b> of scams. By understanding how authority, urgency, and fear are weaponized, seniors can identify the intent behind a message, regardless of the technology used to deliver it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By acknowledging that AI is ubiquitous, the SMART AGE project moves beyond basic functional skills (how to use a device) to critical resilience (how to understand the machine logic behind the screen).
